chromogenic print of an atom-bombed dress, ishiuchi miyako, 2008
miyako photographed clothing and accessories left behind by victims of the 1945 atomic bombing of hiroshima.

“from the 19,000 items made available to me [at the hiroshima peace memorial museum], i chose things that at one time had touched skin and bodies, and photographed them…. a flower-patterned dress colourfully dyed. a puff of gathered, shiny skirt woven of silk thread. cool-looking, thin, gorgeous materials that once shed the summer heat. used kimonos transformed into blouses and cut to make air-raid hoods…. these objects, exposed to the heat and radioactive rays of a fire ball that suddenly appeared one summer morning, and relinquished by the victims of the atomic bombing, have been on earth as long as i have. when i came to realize the coincidence,i caught my breath at their vivid hues and distinct textures, their flaws and complicated detail. these are too deeply linked to daily lives to regard as ‘historical materials.’”

My Response Inspired But Not Directed To This Convo

rayne-leandra:

I’m sorry, but asking someone to “bow out” if they aren’t PoC is ridiculous. No matter race, religion or nationality, every person has every right to say whatever they want about whatever they want, and that’s not something we can help. You have your right to say whatever you need to. So does culturalappropationon. If you’d rather they not speak to you, there’s an “ignore feature”. But you’re on a public forum. With a blog that isn’t password encrypted (which Tumblr does offer). They have every right to address what you said. And like any decent person would, they immediately acknowledged their mistake and apologized when they missed part of the discussion.

Now, I don’t know what you two are talking about, I don’t honestly care. The part I do care about is acting like a white person doesn’t have a right to talk about these things. They do. Just like you do. And yeah, if you must know, this IS coming from a PoC. You’re right, there’s no such thing as “reverse racism”. There’s just racism, and I’m sorry but saying a white person doesn’t have the right to say anything because they’re white is RACIST. Just like it would be if a white person said a black person couldn’t say anything because they’re black.

Is racism against whites as big of a problem as it is for PoC? Hell no. Does that mean that the white person living in a black dominated area that got his ass beat BY a couple black kids while being called names like “whitey”  and “wonder bread” isn’t racism? FUUUUUUUUUCK no. I will always agree that racism against PoC is the bigger problem that needs to be addressed and I will always stand against racism in any way I can… but I that means I stand against racism, period. That means I don’t fight for my people by saying “dumb-ass white-girl” every chance I get or saying white people have no right to speak. MY people were called “niggers” and told WE have no right to speak. Why in the FUCK would I EVER want to do that to someone else? Turning MY pain into a way that could very well end up oppressing another race of people? Belittling and demeaning another race of people because their ancestors, ancestors NOT THEM, did it first? Taking away their voice when some are the descendants of the first white people that said it’s NOT okay that we enslave another man, it’s NOT okay that we wiped out entire races, it’s NOT OKAY and I’m doing something about it NOW because MY idiot ancestors wouldn’t!

Anybody remember these people? Anybody remember that these people got their windows busted with bricks, that a couple were dragged out and beaten? They stood beside us and fought because they believed in equality for EVERYONE and now we wanna say “whitey has no fucking say”.

Fuck that shit man. It’s like people think that if a white person says shit, it takes away from their own words and experiences. It’s like people think that because a white person felt hurt by being told to fuck off BECAUSE they’re white it’s going to take away from what thousands of PoC still deal with everyday.

Let me fucking tell you. You know what takes away from the struggles PoC still fucking experience everyday? When a fucking PoC talks shit about all goddamn white people. When a PoC does nothing but diss white people. When a goddamn PoC does nothing but make RACIST remarks against white people as their defense to end RACISM.

F-U-C-K   Y-O-U.

Now let me fucking tell you what the fuck kind of racism white people are least likely to experience. Institutional racism. White people are literally almost never systematically oppressed by governments because, not counting certain countries, white people ARE the governments. INSTITUTIONAL RACISM is this fucking “prejudice+power” bullshit everyone is talking about. No one wants to fucking admit that RACISM and INSTITUTIONAL RACISM are actually TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

Now we can go ahead and say that it is rare for a white person to actually experience either forms of racism. However, rare is not impossible, especially not for regular racism. So yeah, I do now, and I will ALWAYS fucking believe that a lot of PoC social justice warriors are racist. And if you’re getting a bunch of “white tears” (don’t fucking even) from what YOU’RE saying are white people about how you saying “dumbass white girls” and “white people are so stupid” is actually HURTFUL and RACIST in the EXACT SAME WAY that you say white people are being to you, sorry, but not sorry. It IS racist.

I can’t do shit about what people say. How they react. What they believe. I can’t do shit about racists that say they aren’t racist and then saying that it’s not possible for them to be because the people they’re being racist against can’t experience racism.

Everyone has a RIGHT to their voice, their experiences, and their pain. Everyone has a RIGHT to be angry. Everyone has a RIGHT to be bitter. And fuck yes, that means EVERYONE. No matter race, religion, nationality, height, weight, or shoe size. And telling ANYONE (ANY-FUCKING-ONE) that they have no right to speak IS SO FUCKING WRONG!

I’m done, people. I’ve had it. I’m fucking going to bed. Fuck you very much.

P.S. This isn’t address to the PoC that make a stand for their people without being racist themselves.

P.P.S. This also isn’t to ignore the actually racist white people in the world that suck.

P.P.P.S. If you come at me with saying you didn’t actually bother to read the whole thing, I don’t have any plans of responding to you.

Finally. After tediously scrolling through Tumblr’s endless SJW rants, here’s a well needed voice of reason.

Remember, if your goal is to be anti-racist by tearing apart white people because you believe that they are the living embodiment of their ancestor’s sins against PoC, then you’re going to have a bad time. White people can and do have a voice and opinion on racism. They can also experience it, whether or not you like it or believe it exists.

If you want to have an impact on the world, if you want to change how people interact with the “other”, if you want to end racism and strive for multicultural harmony, the solution is not to isolate yourself by creating self-perpetuating groups that shame people outside of your group for their lack of knowledge. This only creates abhorrence for social justice issues, including those deemed prominent and serious. We have to work together, in mutuality and in equality. We cannot do that if solidarity against racism excludes white people.
